The Spanish Contingent deployed in Latvia is participating in a mission “historic, in being the first where Spain shows armored units outside of National Territory” were the words from President Mariano Rajoy who visited yesterday the Adazi Base accompanied by the Minister of Defense, María Dolores de Cospedal.

Close to 300 soldiers that form part of the rotation, coming mainly from the 11th Mechanized Infantry Brigade “Extremadura”, are integrated within the Multinational Battalion led by Canada, however this situation could change in the future considering that President Rajoy has hinted at the possibility that Spain could assume this responsibility shortly.

The participation of Spain in NATO´s “Enhanced Forward Presence” mission shows ‘the solidarity of Spain with our most remote allies and a great commitment to the Atlantic Alliance”.

Rajoy also wanted to express his gratitude and appreciation to the Spanish soldiers for their work and for the labor they carry out in this Baltic Country.  He bid farewell wishing them “the best” during these months and motivated them by reminding them that by Christmas they will be returning home to their families.
