PLUS ULTRA I

The "Plus Ultra" Brigade, under the command of General Alfredo Cardona, is within the framework of the Spanish-Polish Multinational Division, which is deployed in Iraq.

This Brigade is formed by 1,300 Spanish and 1,200 Central American forces who are in charge of carrying out the functions of reconstructing the country and maintaining security.

Shortly after 8:00 PM on 23rd July, aboard a Boeing 707 the first Spanish force to deploy in Iraq departed from the Zaragoza Air Base, bound for Kuwait.

Their mission was focused on the preparation of camps in the cities of Al Qasidiya and Han Nayaf , where the forces arriving in the area would be quartered. These soldiers were the first 50 members of the "Plus Ultra" Brigade to be deployed in Iraq.

To complete the 1,300 troops sent by the Government, soldiers bound for Kuwait departed from various points in Spain.

The last of these forces, made up of 335 members, departed on 14th August aboard a Boeing 747 from the Air Base in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid).

It is foreseen that the Spanish force, which took over from the US marine troops on 28th August, would be on active duty in the region until December of this year.

The "Plus Ultra" Brigade is also formed by 1,200 forces from Central American countries, who aid the Spanish forces in their tasks of reconstruction of the country and security maintenance.

These countries and their contributions are: Honduras, 370 troops, El Salvador 345 troops and the Dominican Republic, 300 troops. Moreover, there is a Military Police unit, another of Special Operations and an Advance Medical Echelon from Nicaragua, adding 111 personnel.
