After the crisis in Syria and at Turkey’s request, NATO decided to increase Turkey’s air defence capacities against ballistic missiles coming from Syria. This is through the deployment of surface-to-air PATRIOT missiles, in order to develop the anti-missile defence operations.
On 26 December 2014, the Council of Ministers, who had extended the participation of units military observers in operations outside of the national territory, approved the participation of of an Anti-air Artillery Unit in the Army 'PATRIOT' Battery base, along with the necessary support staff, which were made up of an order of 130 troops. The participation of the Patriot battery in Spain has been extended until 31 December 2017.
The current contingent (A/T-V), that comes mostly from the MAAA with exceptional support from other FA units, is being deployed in the Incirlik Turkish base on 19 January 2017, under the presidency of chief commander RAAA 73 Enrique María Silvela Díaz-Criado, accompanied by the Air Force base chief The Turkish Air Force general Ismail Gunayden. This is in addition to the chiefs of the contingents from Germany and United States, who carried out the replacement command between the outgoing chief, lieutenant colonel Luis Pardo Moreno, and the incoming chief, lieutenant colonel Diego Alcolea Navarro, after more than six months of excellent work.
With the fifth Spanish contingent in the “Turkey Support” operation, once again, it remains clear that the Spanish Armed Forces make a permanent contribution to NATO, an organisation that guarantees safety both inside and outside of Spain.
