On the 18th of September, the Balearic Islands General Command promoted cleaning the seabed in the Cabrera archipelago, a national park which is the property of the Ministry of Defence.

The initiative is part of the measures which the Command carries out as part of the ‘Balearic Islands Guard Plan’, which is active from the 15th of May to the 15th of September, starting in 2016, and aims to bring security to the islands and contribute to the preservation of the environment.

Cleaning the seabed is fundamental for the preservation of the natural environment. Three work groups were formed in order to carry out these tasks: one to clean the surface of the beaches, one to clean the shallow waters, and finally, a scuba diving group for cleaning deeper areas. The 47th ‘Palma’ Infantry Regiment from the Balearic Islands General Command worked on the surface level cleaning the beaches and also contributed to the group working in shallow waters, where they worked in collaboration with the Headquarters Unit. For their part, staff from the Diving Section of the Military Sporting Club of Majorca cleaned the deepest areas. Boats from the Cabrera National Park and the Guardia Civil, which has a detachment on the island, also contributed to the activity.

More marine space in the Park

The work of the Army is essential to marine areas, as it is on land. Recently, as a result of an agreement from the Council of Ministers from the 1st of February 2019, the marine area of the National Park was increased, incorporating the adjacent marine areas. This change increased the size of the area by 80,773 hectares, which brings the total area to 90,793 hectares. Although Defence has permanent personnel stationed in Cabrera throughout the year, with the activation of the Balearic Vigilante Plan, the General Command of the Balearic Islands reinforces its presence in the archipelago and guarantees its security against intruders, thus preventing damage to this natural space.
