The Army Invites its Members to Become Friends of the Prado Museum

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Number: 818

The agreement was signed on 8th October

Art enthusiasts who work as civilian or military personnel in the Army have the opportunity to visit the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions in the Prado Museum for a year, without needing to buy a ticket nor queue in order to enter, by joining the “Friends of the Prado Museum” Foundation within the framework of the agreement signed on 8th October between both institutions.

The president of the foundation, Mr. Carlos Zurita, Duke of Soria, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Army General Coll, signed the agreement in the Goya Hall of Buenavista Palace, Army Headquarters.

For the president of the Foundation, this has been a “very special” day because it has allowed him the “great honour” of signing an agreement that invites service persons to be part of a cultural project whose objective is supporting the Museum and having an association with a “highly significant” institution like the Army.  “I hope that this is the beginning of a long, fruitful relationship between both institutions”. He added.

For his part, the Chief of the Army Staff conveyed his “deep gratitude” for the implementation of this type of collaboration, which joins others that are maintained with the art gallery such as having on deposit the four season tapestries from Goya cartoons.  Likewise, the agreement offers the opportunity “to transmit that service persons are also closely linked to culture”.

The Friends of the Prado Museum Foundatioun, thanks to donations by all the Friends, supports the Prado Museum and promotes closer contact between the society and our leading art gallery.

Since 1980 it has undertaken this labour by means of the donation of works of art, sponsoring temporary exhibitions, courses and lecture cycles, editing publications on museum halls as well as the Encyclopaedia of the Prado Museum, among other activities.

To continue this task that we have set for ourselves, it is essential to achieve the collaboration of those who value the Prado Museum and feel that it is everyone’s patrimony.

We invite Army personnel to become part of this Project.
