It is normal that, due to the extraordinary progress of civil works in the 20th century, the importance and significance that the work of military engineers had for society in the 18th century escapes us.

However to bear witness to this, and coinciding with the third centenary of the Engineer Corps, the work group on the Royal and Military Academy of Mathematics in Barcelona presents its second book, with the title “Illustration in Catalonia:  the Work of Military Engineers”, on 31st March at Headquarters Palace in Barcelona.

Aside from military fortifications, works such as the “Camino Real” from Barcelona to Madrid, the Lleida and Valencia roads or bridges such as the “Molins del Rei” over the Llobregat River, among others, give an idea of the significant contribution by these engineers to the economic and social development of Catalonia.

18th century military engineerTheir principal training centre was the Royal and Military Academy of Mathematics in Barcelona, which began to operate in 1720, nine years after the creation of the Military Engineer Corps.

In 2002, on the initiative of Lieutenant General Luis Alejandre, commander of the Pyrenees Regional Command, there was the creation of a multidisciplinary work group of researchers interested in the dissemination of the influence and significance had by the Royal and Military Academy during that period.

This group, of a civic-military nature —participating in it are university professors, civil engineers and service personnel who are experts on the subject—, at present is working under the guidance of Lieutenant General José M. Muñoz, commander of the Army Inspection General.

The group’s first book, also edited by the Ministry of Defence, was published in 2005 with the title “The Academy of Mathematics in Barcelona: the Legacy of Military Engineers”.
