The Teruel Rocket Launcher Bids Farewell

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Number: 1244

The Teruel rocket launcher, in service since the mid 80s, is going to be decommissioned as an operational Army weapons system, after having reached a milestone for its time in the Artillery rocket category.

This weapons system, which was developed entirely by Spanish industry, has equipped the 62nd Field Artillery Rocket Launcher Regiment, located in Astorga (León). With its disappearance, this unit says good-bye to launchers, the materiel that has distinguished it among the regiments of the Arm due to its being the only one with rocket capability.

The decision, approved by the Chief of the Army Staff, is motivated both by the launch platform that serves it and the artillery system itself having become obsolete, owing to the considerable advances that have been made in recent years regarding this materiel, both in increasing range and precision.

Foreseeing this event, and so that the Regiment does not lose operational capability, since October it has been equipped with state-of-the-art 155/52mm howitzers, which are also manufactured in Spain.

The 155/52mm pieces are in service in other Artillery regiments, although it was in the 62nd Field Artillery Rocket Launcher Regiment where its experimental unit was constituted that served to carry out the ballistic tests and make the necessary software modifications in order to reach full operational capacity and subsequent assignment to recipient units.
