On 29th June last, the unveiling of a monolith was held on ‘Isabel II’ Islet (Chafarinas archipelago) to pay tribute to the civilians and servicepersons who have lived  on this Spanish enclave since 1848.  The ceremony was attended by the general commander Melilla, General Álvaro de la Peña, and the President of the Sons and Daughters of Chafarinas Centre, Mr. Jacinto López Tirado.

Prior to this, in the cemetery on nearby ‘El Rey’ Islet, the descendents of the Oses family and Lieutenant Colonel Enrique Barraca, the islet’s Governor until his death in 1897, placed a wreath at this site in memory of the fallen.

The event finalized with a moving address by Mr. Jacinto López Tirado in memory of all those who had lived in this archipelago and in gratitude of the Melilla General Command.
