Military Vehicles Challenged on Their Own Terrain
Friday, July 20, 2012
Number: 1792
To be broadcast on the NITRO TV Channel on 8th September at 12:00 PM
The challenge was proposed by the Funmotorhouse audiovisual production company, and, said and done, on 17th July a report was filmed at ‘San Gregorio’ National Training Centre in Zaragoza, with the collaboration of 2nd Cavalry Brigade ‘Castillejos’ for a television channel dedicated to motorsport, in which the characteristics of some civilian and military vehicles were compared.
The report, which will air on 8th September at twelve o’clock midday on the Nitro television channel, consists of putting to the test the vehicles’ qualities on the training camp’s most adverse terrains and against its toughest obstacles. The Cavalry Brigade contributed a Centauro Cavalry Reconnaissance and Combat Vehicle as well as an URO VAMTAC High Mobility Tactical Vehicle, and the National Training Centre provided a Leopard 2E Main Battle Tank to face the extremely powerful civilian all-terrain vehicles, a Mercedes G400 and a Fornasari buggy.

The civilian vehicles, much faster and more agile, did not have a chance on such demanding terrain as that of ‘San Gregorio’ Training Centre. In fact, the Mercedes G400 had to be towed from a ditch it had fallen into by the Centauro Cavalry Reconnaissance and Combat Vehicle. The hard fought battle between the Centauro and the URO VAMTAC with the Mercedes G400 caused special excitement; the definitive test for the civilian vehicle was to have to climb a 60% grade, which the VAMTAC overcame with great ease.
With the arrival of the Leopard 2E, the day entered its final stage. The imposing main battle tank had to face off in stability with a powerful Fornasar buggy, a test that saw the Leopard come out the winner. In an intense day of filming, the military vehicles passed all the tests the script put them up against with high marks. The production company, very happy with the experience in Zaragoza, showed interest in repeating events of this type.
