The 1st Infantry Regiment “Immemorial of the King” is celebrating that one of its members, Private Francisco J. Cuaresma, won the gold medal last weekend in the team event at the Universal Trench World Championship in Las Gabias (Granada), together with civilian teammates Mario Fuentes and Alberto Fernández.

This excellent 27-year-old shooter from the Regiment’s Security Company became individual champion at the Grand Prix of Italy in May. In addition, he was second at the National Military Shooting Championship in April, which resulted in him being selected to represent Spain a the Military World Games in Korea next October. It will be the first time the Spanish Military Shooting Team competes outside the country.

For Private Cuaresma shooting runs in the blood: He was born into a family of hunting enthusiasts and was introduced to firearms very young. When he was 16 shooting went from being a mere hobby to becoming a sport demanding dedication and commitment. Practising Olympic shooting at competition level requires sponsorship; Cuaresma’s main financial backers are the Royal Spanish Federation of Olympic Shooting and gun cartridges manufacturer RIO.

The soldier’s shelves are already full of trophies. He is now focusing on the next challenge, Korea, where he will have the full-hearted support of his colleagues and commanders at the “Immemorial” Regiment.
