Tuesday, April 23, 2019
Number: 7312
The twinning ceremony between the ‘Extremadura’ 11th Brigade and the Mechanised Brigade from the Portuguese Army was held on the 11th of April at the Santa Margarida military base, coinciding with the 41st anniversary of the Portuguese unit.
The Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Army, Army General Nunes de Fonseca, attended the ceremony. From Spain, the highest ranking official was the Deputy of the Ground Forces, General Rodríguez, accompanied by the chief of the 11th Brigade, General Romero, and other members of the unit.
Although the document that unites the forces was signed on the 23rd of May 2017, the ceremony which should accompany it had been postponed due to various circumstances.
The cooperation between the two brigades which has resulted in the current twinning started some years ago, through joint exercises, witness exchanges, mutual support in training activities and various other events of different kinds.
In May 2016 a Spanish unit (specifically, a Tactical Mechanised/Armoured Subgroup) took part for the first time in ‘Orión´, the Portuguese Army’s Ground Force Command’s annual combined exercise. A year later, the document which twins the two units was signed.
