Members of the 67th ‘Tercio Viejo de Sicilia’ Regiment, who are responsible for the protection of multinational military staff who are deployed in coalition and NATO missions in Iraq said goodbye to the ‘Araca’ base in Vitoria with a 36 hour session during which they used operational zone procedures to resolve various incidences.

These procedures included reconnaissance of routes under the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), altercations and attacks by friendly personnel (green on blue), or vehicle recovery – in both a safe and hostile environment. They also carried out night movement practices with vehicles offering protection against mines and IEDs, like the Lynx, and medical evacuations using a helicopter.

From next week, they will move on to the ‘General Menacho’ base in Bótoa (Badajoz) to face the final phase of their training together with their colleagues from the 11th ‘Extremadura’ Brigade. This unit is the source of the next contingent which, in addition to the Protection Unit for the Inherent Resolve mission and the Protection Force for NATO’s Iraq Mission, includes a Battalion Training Team.
