TRIDENT JAGUAR is the certification exercise of the Spanish Rapid Deployable Corps Headquarters (HQ NRDC-ESP) in order to become the first Deployable Joint Task Force Headquarters for Small Operations.
The execution phase of the exercise will be carried out from the 2nd to the 16th of May in Menorca with the participation of around 1400 soldiers from 20 different countries. The aim of this exercise is to evaluate HQ NRDC-ESP ability to lead a multi-national Allied Joint Task Force with army, navy and air force elements as part of an Small Joint Operation assigned by NATO to operate in a designated area of operations. Once HQ NRDC-ESP is certified as a JTF Headquarters, a one year stand by period will start on the 1st of july 2014 and will end on the 30th of June 2015.
The deployment to Menorca has already started with the arrival of the army ships “El Camino español” and “Martín Posadillo” on the 10th and 14th of April. Most of the equipment that will be needed to set up the Command Post was on board of these two ships. The personnel that will be evaluated during the exercise will fly to Menorca by air in several waves.
HQ NRDC-ESP has implemented a new way of planning military operations called the “COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH”. This concept first appeared in Lisbon NATO summit 2010, when experience gained in the latest operations carried out by the Alliance proved that in new crisis scenarios, a purely military vision of how to deal with a conflict was not sufficient to achieve success. The importance of counting on civilian experts in non-military subjects was very important to improve interaction with civilian organizations. By adding civilian expertise to military operations, we make easier not only the management of the crisis but also the post stabilization and reconstruction if deemed necessary. This concept has been successfully implemented in this Headquarters and nowadays you can see civilian personnel working with the military taking part actively in the decision-making process.
HQ NRDC-ESP is currently one of the eight multinational Rapid Deployable Headquarters in Europe at the disposal of NATO but it will hopefully be the first one to reach the new certification to become a Joint Task Force Headquarters. This certification process in which HQ NRDC-ESP is involved is a symbol of Spanish commitment to NATO to guarantee a safer global environment.
