Monday, July 18, 2016

Number: 5392

On July 12th and 13th, a total of 4 helicopters of the 6th Maneuver Helicopters Batallion took part in the evacuation of a hundred residents of Punta de Teno in Tenerife. They were isolated due to the sinking of part of the road that connects to the place.

Two Superpuma and two Army Augusta Bell with a crew of 13 and a presence of 30 people made a total of 14 surges between the Punta de Teno pickup area and the Garachico port. 133 people and 5 dogs were evacuated making a total of 13.3 hours of flight time.

Some of the flights took place in the wee hours, therefore, the pilots had to use night-vision goggles. Thanks to their night-flight training and the familiarity with the area, they could address the lack of light and bad weather complications.

The Army involvement in this evacuation was asked by the Tenerife Council led by the Canary Islands through the Canary Government Delegation within the Island Emergengy Plan activated by the Council.
