The military area of 'La Isleta' will receive educational and environmental visits under the agreement reached on 29th January between the Ministry of Defence and the Island Council Cabildo de Gran Canaria.

The agreement encourages convergement between Army and society, and contributes to promote environmental awareness among the island's population by direct knowledge of the territory.

'La Isleta', that manages the 'General Alemán Ramírez' base including a shooting and manoeuvring ground, is a protected space because of its environmental value. The Army wants to share it with those 'who believe in nature to teach young people, make known the environment and values of the Canary Islands', in the words of the Ministry of Defence, Margarita Robles, present at the signing of the President of the Cabildo Insular of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Army General Francisco J. Varela.

Afterwards, the Chief of the Army Staff accompanied the Minister in her visit to the General Headquarters of the 16th 'Canarias' Brigade, where she could see several training activities, and in her visit to the manoeuvring ground, where an urban combat exercise was conducted.
