The acting Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, and the Army Chief of Staff, Army General Francisco Javier Varela, visited the ‘Cid Campeador’ base’s facilities in Castrillo del Val (Burgos) on the 7th of May.

Upon arrival, and before a tour of the facilities, they were greeted by the chief of the ‘San Marcial’ Division, General Ruiz Olmos, who had carried out an exhibition and had facilitated the visit to the base, which houses a Base Service Unit, the 11th Campaign Artillery Regiment, the 1st Engineers Regiment, the 1st Transmissions Regiment, a V/22 Transmissions Battalion support unit and a communications centre.

Amongst other facillities, they visited the virtual education, communications and computing room as well as seeing the material and equipment with which the base’s troops work. The Minister witnessed the work of the 2nd maintenance tier of the 1st Engineer Regiment, which provides support to the mobility, countermobility and protection of the unit, as well as to the other Engineer units.

The Minister also observed a minute’s silence in front of the monument to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Yak-42 accident in May 2003.

After visiting the facilities they moved to Atapuerca, the complex of archeological sites to which the ‘Cid Campeador’ base has given support and protection for more than three decades. “For the Armed Forces, anything which involves supporting the history and culture of Spain is very important,” highlighted the Minister when speaking there.
