The US Navy and the Spanish Legion came together on 8 May to pay tribute to Lieutenant General Bernardo de Gálvez at the Port of Malaga, during a ceremony involving soldiers from both countries.

Participants included an honours unit made up of a section of the warship USS McFaul of the US Navy and a company of the tercio “Don Juan de Austria”, the Third of the Spanish Legion, together with the Parade Squad , the Military Music Corps and the Army Band of the Legion’s Brigade. Both the American and the Spanish flags were on display.

The ceremony, which coincided with the 234 anniversary of the Battle of Pensacola, was presided over by General Martín Bernardi, Chief of the Light Forces. Also in attendance were Francisco de la Torre, mayor of Malaga, and a variety of civilian and military authorities, as well as over 2,000 people who did not wish to miss the tribute paid to this honorary citizen of the United States.

A key figure in the American War of Independence

Bernardo de Gálvez, born in the village of Macharaviaya in Malaga, is one of the most important military figures of the XVIII century and of the reign of Charles III. He entered into the Bay of Pensacola in the brigantine Galveztown through its narrow channel and under English artillery fire, a feat which proved decisive for the independence of the United States. He is hence considered a hero in that country, and his portrait hangs in a prominent place at the Capitol in Washington.
