The 16th Brigade ‘Canarias’ helped the Las Palmas Red Cross organise a drill set in a refugee camp in the military area “La Isleta” on 22 and 23 April.

The contribution of the Army was to assemble the refugee camp itself, providing the materials necessary and manpower of troops from Brigade units.

The exercise, dubbed ‘Acorán 2016’, consisted of the assemblage and management of a refugee camp by Red Cross personnel and over 80 volunteers from Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Participants also included teams from local emergency support, temporary shelter, health care, psychosocial intervention, communications and coordination, and emergency medical transportation.
