Number: 6686

The Command Post of the 16th "Canarias" Brigade (BRICAN in Spanish) has been trained in the planning and conduct of crisis response operations, with units deployed at the Manoeuvres and Shooting Field (CMT in Spanish) of Pájara (Fuerteventura) and at the CMT in La Isleta (Gran Canaria), as part of the CPX exercise "Cartago" from the 18th to the 21st of May.

In order to carry out this exercise, a scenerio was simulated outside the island territory, as well as a fictitious enemy composed of conventional and irregular forces. The tactical setting is part of the Brigade's action within an International Coalition, in which an allied country requires military support to prevent aggression from a neighbouring country.

This support began with a military operation led by the head of the Brigade, General Venancio Aguado, from the Command Post of the 16th BRICAN, which was deployed in la Isleta. Two battalions also participated in the exercise, one in La Isleta and the other in Pájara. In addition, a cell for generating and injecting incidents was also established. Its objective was to oblige the chief of the Brigade to take desitions, according to the assessment of the situation and the development of operations.

The head of the Command of the Canary Islands, Lieutenant General Carlos Palacios Zaforteza, attended the last day of the exercise, during which he received all the information related to the exercise.
