Take up the Gauntlet

Tuesday, October 18, 2016

Number: 32

The ‘Venerable Gauntlet’ exercise has been the most important, to date, for the preparation of the 2017 VJTF led by the United Kingdom

The main entry of the word ‘venerable’ is old, respected, and admired; therefore, it is a very relevant term to refer to the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). NATO created this force as the spearhead of its operations, with the greatest military power of the Alliance. ‘Venerable Gauntlet’ is the name given to the last and, to date, most important exercise of the VJTF for 2017. The exercise has taken place at the British base located in the German village of Sennelager between August 29th and September 23rd.

The 2017 VJTF is led by the UK, country that takes up the gauntlet that Spain (now in standby) had prior to them leading the exercise in 2016. Even though Spain hands over its leadership, it remains one of the main contributing countries. Spain contributes with a Tactical Group, created by The Legion Brigade. That Unit has taken part in the exercise along with a National Support Element made up of the Logistics Support Group 21.

The Tactical Group ‘Colon’ is made up of 3 Riffles’ Companies of the 7th Legion ‘Valenzuela’ Battalion, an artillery battery from the artillery group, a Battalion´s Company sappers and a team of Raven operators from the HQ´s Battalion. The whole Tactical Group is under the command of the British Army's 20th Armored Infantry Brigade (The Iron Fist) based in Sennelager.

The materiel deployment and the vehicles taken part in the ‘Venerable Gauntlet’ exercises started at the end of August by sea into the port of Emden in Germany. The transfer of personnel was done by plane from Almeria, Spain, to Paderborn, Germany.

Live and Simulated

Once all of them arrived to their destinations, the first days were devoted to meetings to prepare the activities, lectures and conferences. Among them, the one given by General Cebrian –Chief of the Brigade VJTF16− to explain the lessons learnt during that year. Besides Spain, 13 other countries were present: Albania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, United Kingdom and United States. To break the ice and getting to know each other, sports tournaments. Spain was the best classified at the cross fit sporting event.

After the sports, the exercise itself started; it was divided in 2 phases. The first was oriented to improve the cohesion of the units from different nations with exhibits and demos that ended on September 15th with a tactical abilities exercise in front of a large group of military and political power. The Spanish units practiced combat procedures in urban areas, mobility and counter-mobility areas, rivers’ paths, and openings of gaps. They also practiced with war ammunition with Light Gun, took part in armored, mechanical vehicles attack against an alleged enemies.

The exercises’ phase of Command Positions without deployment of troops on the field, consisted in planning and execution a Brigade-level operation with simulators. This was the culmination to the most outstanding appointment of the VJTF 2017 before the next ‘Trident Juncture.’ This will help to certify the Land Component Command going from Bétera in Valencia to Innsworth, England.
