The present military clinic will be located in the installations of the new university hospital

The final farewell to Military Hospital ‘Capitán Médico Pages ‘became a reality in a ceremony on 29th February, in which the Flag was lowered for the last time.   Being transformed into Military Clinic ‘Capitán Médico Pagés’, it will be located in the installations of the new Civic Military University Hospital in Melilla, once its construction concludes on the land occupied to date by the military hospital.

The director of the military centre, Colonel Pérez Calvo, presided over the ceremony in which the 102 year existence of the military hospital in Melilla was remembered.  During a continuous process of improvements since its foundation, the medical centre had been for many years, and until the construction of the Regional Hospital, the city’s principal healthcare establishment.

The military hospital has adapted its staff and missions to present-day needs and has been reconverted into a clinic, since healthcare for military personnel and their relatives in the present day is carried out at the Regional Hospital and with private entities by virtue of their agreements with the Armed Forces Social Institute.  The clinic, in turn, attends to the needs of the armed forces in Melilla, by performing functions that cannot be undertaken by civilian entities (expert medical examinations, collecting lab specimens for detecting psychotropic substances, medical examinations for personnel who deploy in the area of operations, etc.)

Currently, and until work on the new university hospital finishes on military hospital land, the clinic will provide its services in a building provided by the General Directorate on State Patrimony (the Bank of Spain building).
